Enough has happened since the end of May (!) that I stopped posting.

But I rode a "Z" train the other day and I if not is not reason enough to start posting again, I don't know what is.

Watch: City Island

"City Island"
I just watched this movie on Netflix and was pleasantly surprised. I watched it on a whim, purely looking for something tolerable while I ate dinner.  The acting was well done, the concept refreshing and the plot just awkward enough to still be funny.

Read: Miracles, Inc.

Miracles, Inc. by T.J. Forrester

Elegantly tragic, beautifully engaging, terrifyingly honest. Forrester brings together the intimate moments that mold our lives, sharing them with the reader in a way that makes these memories seem like something of their own misty past. I could not put this book down-- I finished it in one night, and bet you will too.

Sunday Funday

Sunday Funday is back. Yes, that right. I am finally completely and totally sick of spending my Sundays doing work, especially as Spring is slowly (but surely) creeping back to into New York. So I decided to instead spent the afternoon doing dinner and a movie on the other side of the island. We decided to  see Bill Cunningham New York before it officially left Film Forum.

This was the line for pre-purchased tickets--crazy!

But it was well worth the wait. An amazing documentary for all, not just the fashion lovers. It is one of those movies where you feel so much better after seeing it, especially if your most recent adventures in film amount to second or third installments of Madea. Or the like.

Read: Little Bee

Little Bee by Chris Cleave

Intense and riveting, this novel softly settles into your conscious as smoothly and painfully as if pulled from your own memory.
I finished this book in two days. I was wholeheartedly drawn into a familiar but carefully disconnected world that was both beautiful and tragically vivid.

Dine: Tartinery and Hotel Chantelle

Last night I spent the evening with some of my favorite ladies who I freelance with bi-annually. Our first stop was dinner at Tartinery in Soho, new to all of us, which was adorable. Not only did the owners pick a great interior designer, but also someone who knows good bones structure in hiring staff. I've put the link here as I forgot to take pictures.
two pitchers of pink sangria will do that, ha.
In addition to libations we shared a well curated five cheese assortment and five different tartines: Croque Monsieur, Steak Minute (my favorite), Crevettes Avocat, Thon Cru and Saint Mercellin.

The next stop, sans a few ladies, was Hotel Chantelle in LES. I must admit, I love this place. Why? Well, because it's cool beans. We get there just in time for the complimentary friday night burlesque show (who doesn't love burlesque?) and to start the rounds of a lovely gin, blackberry and sour concoction by charming bartenders Paul and Phillip. Behind unmarked doors (i.e., the looks of an abandoned building), Chantelle is a speakeasy-esque french bar that draws the perfect late 20's early 30's crowd--sophisticated downtown artists. Fact: You will find your next lover, favorite bartender, and perhaps your favorite actor, all under one roof.

Read: Edible Magazine

Edible New York: Manhattan

http://www.ediblecommunities.com/content/

I came across this magazine a couple of days ago while in Whole Foods. Initially intrigued the amazing paper quality (I have a weakness for snazzy paper and letterpress) I picked it up to find that the layout design and content was great as well. A magazine based on local food offerings, you can subscribe to Edible based on region to read your fill of farmers, restaurants, foodies and the like in your area.

Read: "The Glass Castle"

"The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls

I was craving a really good book, the kind that you stay up all night reading, continuing over breakfast or under a heavy blanket with tea. This was the perfect remedy. So heartfelt and wonderfully written that it quickly absorbs you so significantly that you quickly forget that it is a memoir.

Visit: Providence, Rhode Island

Farmstead

I frequent Providence relatively often to visit friends, and one of my first stops is always Farmstead on Wayland Ave.
They have an impressive cheese shop as well as perfected seasonal menu that never ceases to make me smile.

This time, we shared a cheese platter complete with honey and house roasted nuts, and I had a Yankee Pot Roast Sandwich: brisket, mire poix, Dijon gravy, Grafton Horseradish Cheddar sandwich with Cape Cod chips and housemade pickles.
